The prosecutor accused the couple of playing the badger game.(檢察民指控那對伕婦靠情色對受害者實施敲詐。)

即“gild the lily”。

To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, to throw a perfume on the violet, to smooth the ice, or add another hue unto the rainbow... is wasteful and ridiculous excess.(給金子鍍上金箔,給百开涂上顏色,給紫羅蘭灑喷鼻火,把冰磨润滑,給彩虹添顏色,英漢翻譯,是多此一舉的。)後來,“paint the lily”就演變成了“gild the lily”。

ment on this would be to gild the lily.(對此發表評說無異於畫蛇添足。)

UNITED NATIONS - The world's population will likely reach 9.2 billion in 2050, with virtually(實質上,實際上) all new growth occurring in the developing world, a U.N. report said Tuesday.

According to the U.N. Population Division's 2006 estimate, the world's population will likely increase by 2.5 billion people over the next 43 years from the current 6.7 billion ― a rise equivalent(相等的,相噹的) to the number of people in the world in 1950.

Hania Zlotnik, the division's director, said an important change in the new population estimate is a decrease in expected deaths from AIDS because of the rising use of anti-retroviral drugs and a downward revision of the prevalence of the disease in some countries.

The new report estimates 32 million fewer deaths from AIDS during the -2020 period in the 62 most affected countries, pared with the previous U.N. estimate in 2004.

This change contributed to the slightly higher world population estimate of 9.2 billion in 2050 than the 9.1 billion figure in the 2004 estimate, the report said,翻译资讯.

The report also said most population growth will take place in less developed countries, whose numbers are projected to rise from 5.4 billion in 20 to 7.9 billion in 2050. The populations of poor countries like Afghanistan, Burundi, Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Niger, East Timor and Uganda are projected to at least triple(三倍的) by mid-century.

By contrast, the total population of richer countries is expected to remain largely unchanged at 1.2 billion. The report said the figure would be lower without expected migration of people from poorer countries, averaging 2.3 million annually(一年一次).

According to the report, 46 countries are expected to lose population by mid-century, including Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea and most of the former Soviet republics.

Zlotnik said most countries in Asia and Latin America have reached the "relatively beneficial stage" of having more working-age adults than children or elderly in their populations, "and they will remain in that stage for at least two more decades."

But their populations will then start to age, heading in the same direction as Europe and North America, she said.

"Europe is the only region at this moment where the number of people aged 60 and over has already surpassed the number of children," she said. "We expect that Asia and Latin America will have by 2050 an age distribution that is very similar to the one that Europe has today."

African countries will have an increase of working-age adults by 2050, but the continent's overall population will also nearly double in that time, Zlotnik said.

"So it is the continent that is going to have to absorb(接收,吸引) a very high increase, and it will have to absorb it at levels of development that are the very lowest that we have in this world," she said.

Keynote Speech at Microsoft Professional Developers Conference

                       Bill Gates

11 December 1997 Beijing,China

Good morning. It's a great pleasure to be here. Today is a major milestone [1] for Microsoft as our first Professional Developers Conference here in China. The key partnerships we build with software developers around the world are central not only to the success of Windows but also to realize the possibility that PC technology provides. It's through applications of every variety that businesses will be using the personal puter as the tool of the Information Age.

It's rather amazing how fast this innovation [2] is moving. Even to keep the like of myself who are deeply involved in the industry to go and see the improvement and every element that are taking place on a yearly basis is quite fantastic. Of course one of the driving factors of this business is the exponential increase in processor performance. There is no doubt that the magic of chip capability has delivered through the advance in microprocessor allows us to think of application which never would have been possible before.

The PC industry is one of the few industries that can deliver lower price equipment at the same time as improving the capabilities. The storage systems are now delivering Gigabyte of storage as the standard capability. Over 80 million of PCs are being sold a year. And the server market, the higher performance machines that these PCs networked with, are the fastest growing part of this business. The performance of those servers is increasing not only because the individual processors are faster, but also because we are using multiple-processor machines, so called SMP designs and clustering nodes together.……

Great chips, systems developers, partners who are sponsoring [3] this event, making this all possible. There is an incredible opportunity for developers. The applications that are written today will sell to an even larger base of machines out in the market. There is a lot that we're doing to increase the work of good developers-make sure they understand where the PC is going and how tools can help them now, more and more marketing type of activities making sure they got in with the customers. This is something that we are going to increase year after year.

The overall [4] DNS message is one about helping developers seize that opportunity by bringing together the different architectures, making things automatic and allowing this to be done in an evolutionary fashion. I think it's a fantastic time to be developer and we appreciate being here and look forward to the opportunity to work with you more. Thank you.

Technical innovation(技朮改革)。

If I'm going to go and live in the US, I must get an American sponsor.(假如我盘算往好國生涯,我必須获得一個美國擔保人)。

President Bush Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month(Oct.9,2008) -

THE PRESIDENT: Hola! Siéntese. Bienvenidos a la Casa Blanca. (Laughter.) (Applause and laughter.)

I am proud to be with you. I am proud to be with current and former Latino members of my administration. (Applause.) I want to thank the ambassadors from the Diplomatic Corps for joining us today. We're proud to be your friends. I want to thank the members of the United States Armed Forces who have joined us. I want to thank my friend Emilio Estefan, President of Estefan Enterprises. (Applause.) And I want to thank Andrés Cabas, from Colombia, who is going to sing a couple of songs for us. Thank you and your band for joining us. (Applause.)

Every year at this time, we recognize the great contributions Hispanic Americans make to our country. And we should. From coast to coast, people of Hispanic descent enrich our culture and make our nation a better place. They serve in top positions throughout business and government. They bring their strong values of faith and family to our munities. My family is proud to have Latino blood -- mi cuñada. (Applause.) Jeb and I both married very well. (Laughter.) Hispanic Americans cherish the limitless promise of our nation. During the past eight years, I've been proud to work with you to ensure que -- ensure que todos puedan alcanzar las promesas de los Estados Unidos. (Applause.)

One promise is good education. I mean, you can't have a hopeful nation unless you've got a good education system. So we worked with Congress to pass the No Child Left Behind Act. This act raises standards and accountability across schools in the country, and I'm pleased to report Hispanic students are scoring at all-time highs on tests, and therefore an achievement gap is narrowing.

For hundreds of thousands of Hispanic children, the best hope for good education is found in America's faith-based schools. Earlier this year, I proposed a new program called Pell Grants for Kids, which would help low-ine children in underperforming public schools attend a private, a parochial, or out-of-district public school of their choice. (Applause.)

Earlier this year I met a very interesting young woman at the White House Summit on Inner-City Children and Faith-Based Schools. The whole purpose was to help these schools realize a eback and make sure our munities were able to have these schools as a part of their future. The woman I met is a woman named Katrina [sic] Ramírez. She grew up in a Chicago neighborhood. It was plagued by gang violence, and she had a tough time in school because she didn't speak English. But at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Karina received a top-notch education. She received real work experience, and she got herself a ticket to college. Karina says, "My dad went from garbage picking in Mexico to having a daughter going to Georgetown." Karina, thank you for ing. (Applause.) She is proof that el Sueño Americano es para todos. (Applause.)

Economic opportunity is a promise of our country. And the truth of the matter is, for generations people have found opportunities in this country that would have been impossible in the places where they were born, and that has made us a vibrant country and it's encouraged entrepreneurship. Today, the economy obviously is going through a very tough stretch, and that's why the administration will work with Congress to pass a financial rescue plan.

The goal of this plan is to free up the flow of capital to help all Americans get the capital and loans necessary to help weather these difficult times. Part of the plan is to free up capital for small businesses. After all, small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and interestingly enough, according to the most recent data, more than 1.5 million small businesses are owned by Hispanic owners. (Applause.)

In times of economic uncertainty, we need to be promoting free trade, particularly with friends in our neighborhood. During my time as President, we've opened up trade agreements with a lot of nations, including nations in Central America and in South America. But there's a couple of them that need to be approved by the United States Congress. We approved the free trade agreement with Peru, but waiting on Congress to approve the free trade agreements with Panama and Colombia. (Applause.)

I'm confident in our economy's long-term prospects. We'll get through this deal. And the reason why I'm confident is because we got the most talented and productive workers in the world. And many are Hispanic men and women who work hard every single day to support their families. (Applause.)

One promise of America is the passion of our people. During my time in office I've been proud to work with Hispanic Americans to lift up nuestros hermanos y hermanas in need. I established the USA Freedom Corps to foster a culture of citizenship and responsibility and service. And today nearly 61 million Americans volunteer their time to help our fellow citizens -- many of them Hispanics.

Through our Faith-Based and munity Initiative, we are the passion of religious groups to reduce homelessness and break the chains of addiction, give prisoners a second chance, and alleviate suffering at home and abroad.

Recently I met a woman from San Diego whose life has been transformed by America's armies of passion. Edith Espinoza suffered terrible abuse from her husband. She turned to "El Nido" program, an interfaith shelter network supported by the Faith-Based and munity Initiative. "El Nido" is a place where Edith received counseling and learned how to get a job and save money. She and her daughters now live in an apartment that she pays on her own. Her goal is to bee a social worker so she can help other families like hers. She is showing that because of the good hearts of our citizens, el sueño Americano es por todos. (Applause.)

One promise of America's freedom -- freedom for all. Hispanic Americans are extending this country's promise of freedom and liberty to others. Hispanics serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, to help those young democracies realize the blessings of freedom. I particularly want to thank those who are working to hasten the day of freedom for the Cuban people. (Applause.)

I'm especially proud to be the mander-In-Chief of a military in which there's 225,000 Hispanic men and women. (Applause.) One of these hispanos is an Army Lieutenant Colonel named Enrique Guerra. Listen to his story. Enrique fled Cuba with his parents when he was an infant. They wanted their young child to grow up in a society that was free and hopeful. He spent more than 22 years in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. Today, he is a battalion mander at Camp Cropper in Iraq, helping the people in the Middle East secure their own freedom and therefore lay the foundation of peace for generations to e.

Enrique puts it this way: "As a Cuban America [sic], I was born with a strong sense of patriotism, and that is why I serve." And today I'm proud to honor his service, and the service of all Hispanic Americans, who ensure that freedom is available to all. Enrique, bienvenidos. Thank you for ing. (Applause.) Thank you, sir.

And so today we the many contributions that generations of Hispanics have made to the American Dream. Their creativity and determination help our country to live up to its promise of opportunity and prosperity and freedom for all our citizens.

During Hispanic Heritage Month we give thanks for these blessings and we ask for God's continued blessings on you and your families, y los Estados Unidos.

And now it's my honor to wele one of Latin America's most popular young vocalists, Colombia's Andrés Cabas. (Applause.)

國內壆者對新詞詞典中的詞目問題存在必定不合,一些壆者對創造新的對應詞持謹慎態度,認為"'對於文明侷限詞',外漢詞典的編纂者的重要任務是要將它們解釋清晰,其次再攷慮給它們創造一些新詞。但若是理据不敷應該作罷,可則有損漢語的規範性。"(黃河清: )另外一種觀點從雙語詞典的性質出發,認為"雙語詞典編者的任務之一是促进'不成性'問'可性'的轉變,即通過各種辦法,為'不行'詞語供给简单被大眾接收的文。從而促進兩種文明的交换。"(黃建華:)墨本来生也認為"在外漢詞典中。詞書編纂者對於新詞的法能够有較大的自在,在某些詞語的法上不從俗應該是允許的。假如同時用括注的式說明某些盛行法之不当,也會是很有利的?quot;

)Cobra n.
)collocate vb.
)domain a.

)Grunge n.
)disk drive n.
)mand n.

)blading n.
)hit parade n.
)click n.&vb..

boomerang baby n.
Squeegee man n.
back-to-back n.

President Bush Meets with Secretary General of NATO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer -

February 29, 2008

PRESIDENT BUSH: It's my honor to wele the Secretary General of NATO back to the Oval Office. Last time I was with the Secretary General I was trying to keep up with him on my mountain bike. He's a dear friend and a strong leader.

I appreciate the -- your helping to transform NATO so it deals with the pressures of the 21st century. You've done your job with great dignity and clarity of thought. And I'm looking forward to ing to Bucharest to support your efforts to make sure NATO is a relevant organization aimed at bringing security and peace to the world.

We've had a lot of things to discuss. A couple of key points: One, Afghanistan. The United States is mitted to the NATO mission in Afghanistan. We're mitted to a prehensive strategy that helps folks in Afghanistan realize security, at the same time, economic prosperity and political progress. Secondly, our hope is that nations that have applied to join NATO continue to meet their MAP obligations. I'm looking forward to getting an assessment of the progress that these three nations have made from you, before we take the vote on enlargement.

I appreciate very much NATO's role in helping to provide some sense of stability in the Balkans. Thank you for doing a training mission in Iraq. Over all, thanks for being a force for good. And I'm proud to wele you back here.

SECRETARY GENERAL DE HOOP SCHEFFER: Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you, George.

Four working weeks until the Bucharest summit of NATO. I can echo the President's words, first of all, NATO's operations and missions. We have a long-term mitment vis-a-vis Afghanistan. I thank the President for the United States' contribution in the NATO framework, which is an essential one. All 26 NATO allies are there and we are there for the long haul. We are there to support President Karzai and the Afghan people. But we're also there because we're fighting terrorism, and we cannot afford to lose. We will not lose; we are not losing; we are prevailing.

May I mention Kosovo, which will be discussed,法文翻譯. The secondary important NATO presence, 60,000 strong, to protect all Kosovars, majority, minority, Albanian or Serb, so that also Kosovo will have a future.

NATO enlargement, the President mentioned. The nations concerned should go on with their reforms. No tickets are punched yet, but NATO enlargement will be on the agenda of the Bucharest summit. And certainly also what I call NATO finding the answers to modern threats and challenges, be it energy security and NATO's role as a bringer of added value. Cyber defense; we saw a huge cyber attack on Estonia not that long ago. Missile defense is certainly an issue.

So we have a real full calendar in Bucharest, and that is basically the calendar the President and I discussed. And I'm always very much enjoying the hospitality not only in the Oval, but at the Crawford ranch, as well.

I thank you very much.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you all.

President Bush and President Kikwete of Tanzania Discuss G8 Working Session with - 英語演講

PRESIDENT BUSH: I'm really pleased to be standing with a really good friend of the American people and a great leader in Africa, President Kikwete of Tanzania. I just -- first of all, I'd like to announce that he's ing to visit in late August. I'm really looking forward to having you to the White House; looking forward to giving you a good dinner. And we'll have a good visit.

PRESIDENT KIKWETE: Looking forward.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Yes. One of the things that's so impressive about his leadership in Tanzania is that the help of the American people is effective help, measurable in the number of people whose lives are being saved, babies are being helped with malaria. I mean, it's just unbelievable the job you've done there. And we're excited to wele you to the country. I really want the American people to hear firsthand how successful their generosity has been, whether it be on HIV/AIDS or malaria. And Tanzania is a good example. But this success would not have taken place without your leadership, really important.

The other thing we discussed in the -- we discussed a lot of issues with the African leaders here in the G8, but one, of course, was Zimbabwe. You know, I care deeply about the people of Zimbabwe. I am extremely disappointed in the elections, which I labeled a "" election. And we, of course, listened very carefully. And President Kikwete, as the head of the AU, has been very involved in this issue. I'm not going to put words in his mouth, he can express his own self, but it was -- this issue of Zimbabwe took a fair amount of time --

PRESIDENT KIKWETE: It did, it did.

PRESIDENT BUSH: -- and rightly so. Anyway, thank you for agreeing to e to the States, and I'm really looking forward to having you.

PRESIDENT KIKWETE: President, let me thank you for the invitation. I'm really looking forward, too. We enjoyed your visit there. I think I've been around for some time. I think one -- that was one of Tanzania's biggest visits.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you.

PRESIDENT KIKWETE: You saw how people came out into the streets to receive you. It's a measure of our appreciation of what the people of the United States have done to apply assist us in many things. Many lives have been saved through those programs in support of malaria, or to HIV/AIDS, but there are so many other programs that are building our -- capacity of our people to measure -- to marry their own development, which we highly appreciate.

Well, of course we see eye-to-eye on many international issues. Of course we have discussed the issue of Zimbabwe, where we understand your concerns. But I want to assure you that the concerns that you have expressed are indeed the concerns of many of us in the African continent. At the last summit of the African Union, many leaders expressed their dissatisfaction at the way things happened. But also we agreed on the way forward.

The only area that we may differ is on the way forward. You see differently, but for us in Africa we see differently. But I think again, there is still room for us for discussions. We are saying no party can govern alone in Zimbabwe, and therefore the parties have to work together to e up to -- to e out, work together, in a government, and then look at the future of their country together.

So this is the way we see it. I don't think there is much, the divergence there. You would have liked to see us do a bit -- some things, we would have liked to see you do some things. But we'll continue to discuss all these issues, and as friends at the end of the day we'll e to an understanding.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you, sir. Looking forward to having you in Washington.

PRESIDENT KIKWETE: Thank you.

PRESIDENT BUSH: Some of these very same people will be there yelling questions there at the press conference.

In the course of time Mr. Earnshaw began to fail. He had been active and healthy, yet his strength left him suddenly; and when he was confined to the chimney-corner he grew grievously irritable. A nothing vexed him; and suspected slights of his authority nearly threw him into fits,翻譯公司. This was especially to be remarked if any one attempted to impose upon, or domineer over, his favourite: he was painfully jealous lest a word should be spoken amiss to him; seeming to have got into his head the notion that, because he liked Heathcliff, all hated, and longed to do him an ill-turn. It was a disadvantage to the lad; for the kinder among us did not wish to fret the master, so we humoured his partiality; and that humouring was rich nourishment to the child's pride and black tempers. Still it became in a manner necessary; twice, or thrice, Hindley's manifestation of scorn, while his father was near, roused the old man to a fury: he seized his stick to strike him, and s with rage that he could not do it.

* humour 翻 [verb] to agree with sb’s wishes, even if they seem unreasonable, in order to keep the person happy: She thought it best to humour him rather than get into an argument.

At last, our curate (we had a curate then who made the living answer by teaching the little Lintons and Earnshaws, and farming his bit of land himself) advised that the young man should be sent to college; and Mr. Earnshaw agreed, though with a heavy spirit, for he said - 'Hindley was nought, and would never thrive as where he wandered.'

I hoped heartily we should have peace now. It hurt me to think the master should be made unfortable by his own good deed. I fancied the discontent of age and disease arose from his family disagreements; as he would have it that it did: really, you know, sir, it was in his sinking frame. We might have got on tolerably, notwithstanding, but for two people - Miss Cathy, and Joseph, the servant: you saw him, I daresay, up yonder. He was, and is yet most likely, the wearisomest self-righteous Pharisee that ever ransacked a Bible to rake the promises to himself and fling the curses to his neighbours. By his knack of sermonising and pious discoursing, he contrived to make a great impression on Mr. Earnshaw; and the more feeble the master became, the more influence he gained.

He was relentless in worrying him about his soul's concerns, and about ruling his children rigidly. He encouraged him to regard Hindley as a reprobate; and, night after night, he regularly grumbled out a long string of tales against Heathcliff and Catherine: always minding to flatter Earnshaw's weakness by heaping the heaviest blame on the latter.

Certainly, she had ways with her such as I never saw a child take up before; and she put all of us past our patience fifty times and oftener in a day: from the hour she came down-stairs till the hour she went to bed, we had not a minute's security that she wouldn't be in mischief. Her spirits were always at high-water mark, her tongue always going - singing, laughing, and plaguing everybody who would not do the same. A wild, wicked slip she was - but she had the bonniest eye, the sweetest smile, and lightest foot in the parish: and, after all, I believe she meant no harm; for when once she made you cry in good earnest, it seldom happened that she would not keep you pany, and oblige you to be quiet that you might fort her. She was much too fond of Heathcliff. The greatest punishment we could invent for her was to keep her separate from him: yet she got chided more than any of us on his account. In play, she liked exceedingly to act the little mistress; using her hands freely, and manding her panions: she did so to me, but I would not bear slapping and ordering; and so I let her know.

Garnish

Mother garnished fish with slices of lemon.(媽媽拿檸檬片給做好的魚上减點綴。)

The turkey was served with a garnish of parsley.(做好的水雞上里配上芫荽做點綴。)

The debtor's employer was garnished.(債務人的僱主被通知扣發債務人的工資)。

This greeting is much newer than most people think. The use of hello as a greeting is only as old as the telephone. The first recorded use is from 1883.

It does, however, have earlier origins in other senses. It is a variant of hallo, which dates to 1840 and is a cry of surprise. That in turn is related to halloo, a cry to urge on hunting dogs. Halloo dates to about 1700, but a variant, aloo, appears in Shakespeare's King Lear a century earlier than that.

And there is an even earlier variant, hollo, which dates to at least 1588 when Shakespeare used it in Titus Andronicus. There are also cognates in other Germanic languages.

Hello was not a shoo-in for the telephone greeting either. It peted with several other options, including Alexander Graham Bell's suggestion of Ahoy, but pulled into an early lead and by the end of the 1880s was firmly ensconced.

President Bush Attends Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at White House -

October 10, 20

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Please be seated. Siéntese. Gracias. It's a beautiful day. I'm glad you're here. Thanks for ing as we Hispanic Heritage Month. Every year at this time, we recognize the rich cultural traditions of the Hispanic American munity -- and the great contributions of Hispanic Americans to our country and our . That's why we're here.

I appreciate so very much Ambassador Sue Schwab, who is the U.S. Trade Representative, for joining us. We're proud you're here, Madam Ambassador. I'm going to say something positive about trade, so I'm glad you came. I appreciate my friend, my dear friend, former Attorney General of the United States, Al Gonzales. (Applause.) I appreciate Anna Cabral, U.S. Treasurer, and Victor. Thank you all for ing. (Applause.) I'm proud that other members of my administration have joined us. Sarah, it's good to see you; thank you for being here.

I thank my friend, Emilio Estefan, who has provided the entertainment. I'm going to say something about the entertainment a little later, but Israel, we're glad you're here. I appreciate the members of the Diplomatic Corps; I appreciate the ambassadors ing. We're proud you're here. Thanks for taking time.

I have just met a remarkable woman that I want to introduce to you: Yamile Llanes Labrada, and her daughter, Shirlen García, have joined me in the Oval Office. Yamile is the wife of a political prisoner in Cuba, Dr. José Luis García Paneque. The doctor was a plastic surgeon. He did nothing more than advocate for freedom. And he's now in prison. And not only is he in prison, he's ill. And so one of the messages I have for the Cuban leader is, free this man, and free other political prisoners. He's not a threat to you. Let him be reunited with a woman who loves him dearly, and his four children. So, Yamile, thanks for ing. We're proud you're here. (Applause.) Sure glad you're here.

Citizens of Hispanic descent are the fastest-growing population in America. Hispanic Americans strengthen our nation with their mitments to familia y fe. Hispanic Americans enrich our country with their talents and creativity and hard work. Hispanic Americans are living the dream that has drawn millions to our shores -- and we must ensure that the American Dream remains available for all. It's an important part of our past, and it's a central part of our future that people from all walks of life feel weled and given the opportunity to realize the blessings of America.

Realizing the promise of this good country requires a good education. You know, I worked hard with Republicans and Democrats to pass what's called the No Child Left Behind Act. That's an important piece of legislation because it raises standards, and it holds schools to account. And the law is working. It's a good piece of legislation. It's working because I can report to you that last month we saw the results from what's called the Nation's Report Card. The report card showed record performance in 4th and 8th grade math and 4th grade reading. And the report showed that Hispanic students scored all-time highs in a number of areas. And so we need to build on that progress. It's good that we've got a good report card; we want excellent report cards for every child.

I met yesterday with civil rights leaders. See, I believe a good education is a civil right. And we talked about how we can work together to make sure the No Child Left Behind Act is not only reauthorized, but is made stronger. The Congress needs to make sure we don't lower standards. Congress needs to make sure we raise standards and hold people to account, so that every child, every child can learn in the United States of America. (Applause.)

Realizing the promise of America requires a growing economy. Last week, we got more good news on this front. The economy added 110,000 new jobs in September, giving us 49 straight months of job growth -- and that's a new record. We are now enjoying the longest period of uninterrupted job creation in the history of the United States. The growing economy is the result of good policies, like low taxes, but it's also mainly the result of hard work of workers and entrepreneurs, including hundreds of thousands of Latino business owners.

And so to keep the economy growing, we've got to make sure we don't raise your taxes. And to keep the economy growing, we've got to open new markets for goods and services. One of the most important markets is in our own hemisphere. Many Hispanic-owned businesses in our country depend on trade with Latin America. Trade with the region strengthens ties of friendship and merce. Free trade helps our neighbors prosper. And so to expand trade with Latin America, we negotiated, and Congress approved, a free trade agreement with five Central American countries, as well as the Dominican Republic. And this agreement is working, it's helped American workers. It's new markets for products made here -- right here in the United States. And it's helped our neighbors. We want everybody to do well in our neighborhood. We want prosperity to abound.

And that's why we've negotiated new free trade agreements with Peru and Colombia and Panama. For the sake of businesses and sake of our workers, and for the sake of prosperity in the neighborhood, the United States Congress needs to approve these three very important trade agreements. (Applause.)

Realizing the promise of the country requires strong munities, where people care for each other in times of need. Yamile found help in the United States from people who care about the condition of her husband. A total stranger that didn't know Yamile before she came to the United States said, how can I help you; what can I do? That happens all across our country when Hispanic Americans run soup kitchens and drug treatment clinics and hear the call -- God's call -- to love our neighbors as we'd like to be loved ourself.

We see this spirit in Hispanic Americans who volunteer as Little League coaches, or serve as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, or give their time and energy to improve the lives of people that live across the street from them. By caring for others, Hispanic Americans make ours a better and more passionate nation -- and America appreciates the example they set.

Finally, realizing the promise of America requires a secure country. We honor the many Hispanic Americans who wear the uniform here at home -- the police, and firefighters, and emergency rescue personnel who risk their lives each day to protect our homeland and our munities. And we honor the 200,000 Hispanic Americans who serve in our Armed Forces -- who are working to spread liberty so we can be secure here in America; who are doing the hard work today so our children and grandchildren can grow up in peace. I appreciate the fact that they have volunteered in a time of danger, and I'm proud to wele members of the United States military with us today. Thank you all for ing. (Applause.)

So during Hispanic Heritage Month, we the diversity that makes our country stronger -- and the heritage and the spirit that Hispanic Americans bring to this great democracy. To help us the heritage and spirit, we have an incredible talent: "Cachao." He was born in Havana only in 1918. That was before my time. During the late 1930s, he helped popularize the mambo, and over the past half century he has won a lot of Grammy Awards -- most recently in , believe it or not. So if you do the math, you can figure out this man hasn't stopped working. (Laughter.) He's still clicking, and he's still making good music. And so we're proud to wele Israel Lopez, better known as "Cachao," to here -- to the White House. Thank you for ing. (Applause.)

* * * * *

THE PRESIDENT: I know you'll join me in thanking Cachao for ing. Guess when the first he was here -- 1948 he played for President Harry Truman. (Applause.) Wele back. (Applause.) We're sure glad you're here. Thank you all for ing. I want you to say hello to Yamile again, una más vez. (Applause.) We certainly pray for the speedy release of your husband, and we're glad you're here at the White House. No better place to e and recognize the great beauty of freedom. We want to thank you all for joining us as we the great diversity and freedom of the United States.

Que Dios les bendiga.
